Romans 3:21 -4:25

Oct 22nd. Week 3 Romans 3:21 to 4:25

Chris Hodder opens out Paul's "solution for all".

With just two words...

"But now..."

The most important "but" in the Bible"?

You can listen to Chris again.

Or if you prefer, read his notes.

The memory verse is ...

Romans 3: 23-24

"...all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Chrst Jesus."

...and finally, here are several questions to take you forward.

1.    Can you remember when you were dealt with in an unfair way?  How did that feel?  Conversely, have you ever been let off of something when you deserved to be punished?  How was that in contrast?

2.    How do you feel when you hear talk about the “wrath of God”?  What about it might be an important aspect of God’s character to remember, and what about it can be problematic?

3.    Conversely, how do you understand the “righteousness of God”?

4.    God’s righteousness comes to us in Christ (v22), freely and without our own effort (v23-24).  How do you understand those verses?  Do you find the idea of grace and gift easy or hard to accept, and why?

5.    How do you see God’s wrath/justice and God’s love/mercy relating to one another in the cross?

6.    On May 24th, 1738, John Wesley reluctantly attended a meeting in Aldersgate. Someone read from Luther's Preface to the Epistle to Romans. About 8:45 p.m. "while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for salvation; and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death."  He later said of his conversation that he had exchanged the faith of a servant for the faith of a son.  How do you respond to that in your own life?

(And for those who missed the intro - here's how Chris positioned his talk ahead of Sunday - with help from some accomplished "but" ...ers).
